Bishop Ralph and Fr Stan Maciuszek concelebrated Mass to commemorate the opening of St Mary’s Church in 1965.
The congregation included the people of the parish and former parishioners, together with the Mayor and Mayoress of Penistone, Andrew and Gill Milner, friends from the neighbouring Anglican and Methodist communities and Presentation Sisters and Marist Sisters who had worked in St Mary’s parish. Members of the Callanan family had travelled from Ireland in honour of Fr John Callanan, who played such a major part in establishing St Mary’s in Penistone.
Some parishioners including organist, Mrs Edna Daly, received personal blessings from the Pope and Bishop Ralph presented St Mary’s and its parishioners a Papal Blessing to commemorate the 50th Anniversary.
The celebration coincided with the fact that parish priest, Fr Stan was celebrating the fortieth anniversary of his Ordination and parishioners made a presentation to him.
Mass and the blessing of a new grotto were followed by lunch and the party went on into the afternoon.
