This month, we are finding out all about prayer and praying.  As followers of Jesus, we know that prayer is important because it brings us closer to God.  It is like spending time with our friends as we get to know them better.  We get to know God better when we spend time listening and talking to him.  When do you pray?  Where do you pray?

Jesus spent a lot of time praying – sometimes on his own and sometimes with friends or crowds of people.  What was important to Jesus was that prayer brought him closer to God his Father in heaven.

One day, the disciples (Jesus’ special friends) asked him to teach them how to pray.  Jesus taught them what we call The Lord’s Prayer, and this can be found in the Gospels of both Matthew (chapter 6: 9-13) and Luke (11: 1-4).

We often say this prayer when we pray together. We can pray in church, at home and in school.  In fact we can pray anywhere!  And we can say anything to God, but it is good to pray The Lord’s Prayer too.  Do you know the words already?

We will look at what the words mean and help you to understand them better.

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name

This sentence means that we are talking to God and that he is very special to us.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven

Christians believe that God’s Kingdom is a place where there is peace and love.

One day, Christians hope that earth will also be a place of love and peace too.

Give us this day our daily bread

This means that God cares about us all in every part of our lives.

And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who trespass against us

Christians believe that by Jesus dying on the cross all our sins are forgiven, but we must also remember that if anyone hurts us in any way, that we must forgive them.

Did you remember to say sorry to God when you made a bad choice?

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Amen

Making a bad choice is a temptation and through prayer, we ask that God helps us to make the right choice.  We also ask that God protects us from evil.  We say Amen to end the prayer.

I Wonder …

Which part of the Lord’s Prayer you like the best?
