September 2013 saw the introduction of a Chaplaincy Team at St Mary’s Primary School, Chesterfield. Pupils were invited to apply to join the team. They were interviewed and the successful applicants come together each week to meet with the school Chaplain, Sister Bernadette. This meeting is an opportunity for the team to talk about their work and their plans.
The team has a badge, which they wear. It is a Christian fish symbol with a cross inside.
In their early days as a team they were involved in the school’s Harvest Celebration Liturgy, where they dramatized the Gospel story of The Feeding of the Five Thousand.
At the start of October, the team decided to pray a decade of the Rosary once a week each lunchtime. This was a very successful initiative, with pupils and adults coming together in prayer.
Amy, Bradley, Hollie, Michelle, Loretta and Grace make up the Chaplaincy Team, led by Sister Bernadette, and they are all enjoying their new role and are keen to incorporate the ideas of other pupils to enhance the life of the school.
