Following the retirement of Sr Clare Smith and Fr Don Stoker, Caritas agreed to oversee this service and consider any appropriate development. A meeting took place on Saturday, 18 February, attended by a couple of ‘signers’ and interested parties.
It was decided to invite Fr Paul Fletcher, Director of the National Service for the Deaf, to speak to an Open Meeting to advise on:
1 Recruitment of ‘signers’
2 A course for ‘sacramental’ signing
3 Frequency of Masses for the deaf and hard of hearing
4 An overview of the national service in dioceses
Joe McNally generously offered to chair future meetings in the short term. All present were appreciative of the initiative from Caritas to review the current situation and host any future meetings. Development will rest on the availability of resources, especially qualified sign language specialist.
