Pictured is Bishop Ralph, who is an excellent supporter of this event, with the first three placed of the fifth Catenian Public Speaking Competition, which was held at St Thomas a Becket Catholic Secondary School in Wakefield on 25 February.

  The competition, which requires pupils in Years 11 or 12 from Catholic Schools in the Catenian Province 3, which takes in almost the whole of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, to speak for four minutes on a topic which they have chosen from a given list of fifteen.

  John Shaw of the McCauley Catholic High School, Doncaster was the winner with his chosen topic of “Money buys Happiness”.  He was awarded the Mary Neal Trophy and a cheque for £100.  He will now speak in the National Finals at the Conference Centre, Manchester University in September.

  Runner up was Vuyelwa Mukuze of St Pius X Catholic High School, Wath on Dearne, who received a cheque for £75.

  Harry North of St Thomas a Becket Catholic Secondary School in Wakefield came third, receiving a cheque for £50.

  All other competitors received a cheque for £20.
