For some time now there has been a Mass celebrated in Spanish on the first Saturday of every month in the Cathedral Church of St Marie. On 14 December there was a special celebration to mark the solemnity of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The Mass was celebrated venerating the image of Our Lady and it was carried in procession, accompanied by the traditional group of “matachines” who danced in honour of Our Lady. The procession began in Fargate outside the Cathedral. There were more than 150 people in attendance, the majority of Hispanic origin, and after the Mass there was a social gathering and sharing of traditional Mexican foods.
In his message to Latin America on 12 December Pope Francis said, referring to Our Lady of Guadalupe, “The message of Our Lady of Guadalupe is also my message, the message of the Church. I ask all the people of the Americas to open wide their arms, like the Virgin, with love and tenderness.”
At the Cathedral we continue to welcome and serve all those from the Americas who come to Sheffield for reasons of work or study. Watch the Cathedral web page for news of future Masses in Spanish.
