As Emeritus Bishop John enters his well-earned retirement, CAFOD supporters in Hallam will miss a true and doughty friend.

Although he placed himself in the rank and file at events he served as Chair of CAFOD’s board of trustees, from which he oversaw a number of organisational changes, including the move of the London offices from Brixton to North Lambeth. Bishop John in Liberia s

He undertook a number of overseas visits not just to witness livelihood projects in action but to view the work undertaken in humanitarian disaster areas as well.

On top of these demanding duties he never waivered in supporting the Hallam Diocesan team whenever he could.

“Emeritus Bishop John really encouraged us,” says Angela Powell, CAFOD Manager, “and all of us in Hallam will always be grateful for his wisdom and guidance.  He was a regular walker and a popular figure on the Christian Aid/CAFOD May Day treks, helping to raise thousands of pounds.

“As much as we are going to miss him,” continues Angela, “we extend a very warm welcome to Bishop Ralph and look forward to working alongside him in promoting CAFOD’s work in the diocese.”
