Mrs Betty Wade, a parishioner of Holy Rood Parish, Barnsley was recently presented with the prestigious Benemerenti Medal and certificate by Parish Priest, Fr Damian Humphries.

Betty, now 87 years old, has played the organ at Holy Rood for 60 years – only retiring in recent years as she could no longer walk up the spiral staircase to the choir loft!  This is a truly incredible achievement and a real lifetime of service.  Betty played the organ for the choir at 9.30am Sunday Mass and often stayed to also play for the 11.15am Mass.  In addition to this, there was the weekly choir practice every Thursday and many weddings, funerals and countless other special occasions.

Betty has totally dedicated her life to serve God and others in a most marvellous and inspiring way through her music ministry and the award of the Benemerenti from the Pope is richly deserved indeed.

After Mass, there were refreshments and a special cake for Betty to enjoy with people from the parish.
