Retiring President of Barnsley Circle, Mike Starford, chose the St Vincent de Paul Society as the main recipient of charity monies generously raised at several social events held throughout his Catenian year.
Mike is also President of his local SVP Parish Conference of St Martin de Porres Church in Wakefield. Wakefield is a regional centre for the temporary accommodation of asylum seekers and refugees with a three week turnover of up to 300 individuals and families housed in a former prison training school renamed ‘City of Sanctuary’. The Council of Churches in the Wakefield area collectively provide support alongside the SVP. Local needs are also supported for the homeless and deprived families in the immediate area in the form of clothes, food, furniture, temporary lodgings, a ‘drop in’ centre and family holidays.
The recent launch of the ‘Mini Vinnies’ junior conferences at two local primary schools helps to highlight the profile of the SVP and creates an opportunity for pupils to participate in the work of the SVP.
At the Barnsley Circle May meeting Brother Mike presented a cheque for £1500 to David Slingsby, a Brother of Wakefield (West Riding) Circle and also Treasurer of the Parish SVP.
