Colour in our picture of the Ascension

This month, we are celebrating two very important Christian festivals that happen in the weeks after Easter.  The first is Ascension Day, which is when, after appearing to his disciples and the women at the tomb, Jesus ascended into heaven to be with his father.  Mark’s Gospel tells us, “So after talking with them the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven, and he took his seat at the right hand of God.”

Colour in our picture of Pentecost

The second celebration is Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was sent to help the first Christians with their mission of spreading the word of God to everyone.  It is sometimes known as the birthday of the church.  Your priest might be dressed in red vestments which have flames on them as that is one of the symbols of the Holy Spirit.  There are other symbols of the Holy Spirit.  Can you think of two of them?

The Pentecost story appears in Acts 2: 1-4: “… something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them.”

Activity:  Make your own headband by measuring a loop that goes around your head out of card or paper, then attach to the top with staples or tape, tongues of fire in flame coloured paper (red, yellow).

My Prayer to the Holy Spirit

When you were baptised, you received the Holy Spirit.

Write a prayer that thanks God for the gift that he gave you at your baptism.
