Welcome to our children’s page on Advent. Advent is a time of preparation: a time of waiting to celebrate the coming of the “beloved son” of God.  He is the chosen one, whom God said he would send us.

The season of Advent begins the Church’s Year.  The first Sunday of Advent is the first day of our new church calendar.

An Advent wreath helps us to follow the journey towards Christmas.  Each Sunday a new candle is lit.  There are four Sundays in Advent so there are four candles.  Often the candles are of our Advent colour – purple, and sometimes a pink one for the third Sunday, ‘Gaudete’ or ‘Joy’ Sunday.

Have a look in your church or school.  Can you see an Advent Wreath?  How many candles are lit?  Perhaps you may have an Advent wreath at home?

A fifth candle, a white one, will be lit when Christmas comes.
