Advent is a time of preparation: a time of waiting to celebrate the coming of the “beloved son” of God.  He is the chosen one, whom God said he would send us.

Advent asks us not to get to Christmas too soon but to wait … and wait until it comes.  Then the Church offers us three weeks in the Christmas season for all our celebrations.

The season of Advent begins the Church’s Year.  The first Sunday of Advent is the first day of our new Church calendar.

An Advent wreath helps us to follow the journey towards Christmas.  Each

Sunday a new candle is lit.  There are four Sundays in Advent so there are four candles.  Often the candles are of our Advent colour – purple, and sometimes a pink one for the third Sunday, ‘Gaudete’ or ‘Joy’ Sunday.

Have a look in your church or school.  Can you see an Advent Wreath?  How many candles are lit?  Perhaps you may have an Advent wreath at home?

A fifth candle, a white one, will be lit when Christmas comes.

Family Prayer

During Advent, we are preparing to celebrate the birth of God’s son and so it helps if we pray daily to get our hearts ready.

This family prayer from Loyola Press is a good starting point to help you and your family in your spiritual journey.

God of Love,

Your son, Jesus,

is your greatest gift to us.

He is a sign of your love.

Help us walk in that love

during the weeks of Advent,

As we wait and prepare for his coming.

We pray in the name of Jesus,

our Saviour.

Amen

I wonder …

I wonder how the prophets heard God’s message?
