On 1 September Rotherham Parent Carer Forum became the new tenant of the Presbytery at St Joseph’s, Rawmarsh. The Parish are delighted to have the forum as their tenants. The house will be the forum’s office base.
A considerable amount of work has been done by parishioners to get the house ready for the forum; installing an appropriate fire alarm system, changing the status of the house from a residential dwelling to a place of business, widening the access for parking and a whole host of other tasks.
This parish/forum relationship is a real gift to the parish. The forum is a registered charity run by and for families of children and young people (aged 0-25) who have Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND).
In April this year the forum received the Duke of York community initiative award.
The principles or cornerstones of their work align with our own gospel values – Welcome and Care, Value and Include, Communicate and working in true partnership, developing and nurturing a climate of trust.
This follows the teachings outlined in Populorum Progressio, ‘To take a preferential option for those in need’.
Jayne Fitzgerald, Strategic Lead for participation and engagement, said, “The Forum is really excited about this new move. Whilst we work nationally and regionally effecting change, it is here in localities, in partnership with local communities, where voice and experience really makes a difference to local services. We have almost 1000 families as members in Rotherham from all cultures and backgrounds, working together to reduce isolation, reach out to other families and make a real difference to outcomes for children and young people with SEND in partnership with local services and organisations. Our partnership with St Joseph’s will provide opportunity to extend our reach to families, supporting them in navigating the maze and giving more time to celebrate our amazing families.
