Fifty years ago this November the 2nd Vatican Council issued the Decree on Ecumenism, Unitatis Redintegratio (Restoration of Unity), with its eventual hope of reconciling all Christians in the one and only Church of Christ. Since then the Catholic Church has continued to support and play a pivotal role in the ecumenical movement and the Diocesan Mission and Unity Committee suggests two ways in which local parishes and congregations could fittingly celebrate this anniversary and continue the ecumenical role at local level – by making a conscious effort to:-
- Pray with our fellow Christians of other traditions in a common act of worship
- Attend a service at a church of another tradition and make ourselves known as fellow Christians on a common path
The ideal time would be around 21 November, the date of promulgation of the decree in 1964.
The Diocesan Mission and Unity Committee would be delighted to receive feedback from this or any other ecumenical celebration. You can contact us via the Pastoral Centre or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
